What tank size do I need for my glamp startup?

What tank size do I need for my glamp startup?
This is part one of a series of mini-blogs, JT - Glampsan's Bossman explains how to you choose the right waste sanitation tank size against the cost of removing waste from your glamping site.
Is big best or is small sexy?
Here at Glampsan, many of our customers ask us daily, ‘Please quote me for:
- your smallest and cheapest tank you make’ or,
- your largest tank you sell.’
Which is right, and which is wrong? Well, it depends – both are correct, and both are wrong! Confused? To clear this up for you, here’s a few illuminating thoughts ‘n facts for you to consider:
All waste sanitation tanks need to be pumped out and cleaned at some point. This has to be done by a tanker vehicle that you need to schedule in advance. That tanker then rocks up a few days later to suck out all that whiffy-waste and remove all those nasty-niffs. So, depending on the size of your glamp-camp-gig and the size of the tanks you select, you will have to determine when it needs emptying.
The thing about small waste tanks is that they fill up fast. So, if you order our Mini Flat-Tanks for example, it will cost less in capital outlay. True! However, the knock-on effect means it forever needs pumping out. That requires time, faff and dosh too. Not to mention the carbon footprint in diesel emissions as well.
So, instead, it’s best to order a big tank, right? Err, nope! That’s not always right either. Ordering our largest tanks will undoubtedly mean that it doesn’t need emptying out so often – bonus! But, the cost outlay for the tank and the groundworks to get it installed might be overkill. Duh! Also, you will need to consider the disturbance of tankers removing the waste on your glamp-camp guests during their holibob time! For obvious reasons, you want to try to avoid that as much as possible.
Here’s a quick case study…
Although our Mini Flat-Tank (160-gallon) is roughly 1/3 the size of our smallest 500-gallon Flat-Tank, the cost from the liquid waste contractor might mean higher emptying charges. For 3 x tanker waste removal visits to empty the Mini Flat-Tank will end up higher than just one visit to pump out one 500-gallon Flat-Tank.
Why would this be?
Well, liquid waste contractors generally have standard callout charges for up to 500-gallons (or 2270 litres). This is commercially understandable if they have to drive 20 miles in an expensive vehicle using a highly trained operative to get to your site. That means the actual cost of extracting and disposing of each 160-gallon versus 500-gallons waste works out the same. So, you are already paying 3 times over for emptying the small tank compared to the larger tank. On top of this will be added the truck, and operative time too. Therefore, it follows in this example that the large tank will work out much more cost effective pretty quickly.
So, back to our original question, ‘is big best or small sexy? In this case big is best.
So, as you have learned, overall, there’s more to picking a waste tank than just going for the cheapest. You’ll need to think about the ongoing costs of cleaning.
At Glampsan, we’ll take that problem away from you. We’ll happily help you select whatever the right sized tank is for your specific need. Whether that’s a tank for a Shepherds Hut, a Treehouse, or a cluster of luxury pods, we can help you get your investment just right. Just give us a call.
In our next blog in this series, we will consider typically how many gallons of waste needs dealing with at your glamp-camp. This will help you select the right tank size to handle your waste.
And one more thing, we’re big on Social Media too
One of our passions is that we love using social media like Facebook, Twitter and Instagram in quirky and fun ways to appeal to you rather than trawl through endless emails. And we have lots of fun with video too, to get our messages across to you.
